I also had the older style jodpers not high quality but the stretchy ones hadn’t come in then. I had so many happy hours riding. I used to make the saddle cloths for my pony so that he looked colourful. I explored most of Bath where I grew up on the back of my horse, I knew all the back lanes and streets, not so much traffic then. Wonderful.
MaryBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06484547773951002322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8782167599693788794.post-44593825696839983812023-11-27T02:06:01.077+00:002023-11-27T02:06:01.077+00:00I also read the Pullein-Thompson sisters and Pat S...I also read the Pullein-Thompson sisters and Pat Smythe books! Also Monica Edwards. Has to wait to get my copy of Pony from HW Smiths. Loved the Pen Pal section, but read everything, including all the ads. Actually ordered a Julip Model Horse. I wasn't overly enthusiastic at wearing them, because I knew that they were out of fashion by then. Mum, being ever short of money, made me wear them for my riding lesson later on that week. I had never felt as embarassed in my life as I took part in that lesson. Others on the ride had the stretch ones even my two friends who weren't as 'horsey' as I was. I wanted the ground to swallow me up there and then as I felt I was getting laughed at. It would have been less embarassing to wear jeans. Mum did get me a pair of secondhand stretch ones, however, when I complained that I was the odd one out!Janine Mellorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02092782931010483813noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8782167599693788794.post-23860431424667921052023-06-01T01:00:03.662+01:002023-06-01T01:00:03.662+01:00Just read these, takes me right back - riding less...Just read these, takes me right back - riding lessons at Castle Dyke, Sheffield, for 8/6d, went up to 10/- (50p), Pony Club at Barlow Hunt, local gymkhanas and seeing international show jumping stars at the Sheffield Show....
Jacatex COD method did involve the postman collecting the cash, and probably also a receipt /paperwork, I was lucky enough to receive the Pat Riding Mac as a present from my Gran, who didn’t trust cheques! Their jodhpurs didn’t last as long as the Caldene ones, though, or maybe I just outgrew them. We had a Moss Bros catalogue from the saddlers, and used to drool over all the equipment featured....whoever used that ‘Lane-Fox Saddle’?!
Didn’t any of you also read all the My Friend Flicka, Thunderhead, Green Grass of Wyoming books, too? Pullein- Thompson sisters, Ruby Ferguson, and Pat Smythe’s three Jays - not a PC nor woke storyline in sight!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8782167599693788794.post-52380019940987816252020-11-01T21:51:33.832+00:002020-11-01T21:51:33.832+00:00The above post mirrored my life in the late 60'...The above post mirrored my life in the late 60's! My Dad got me Pony magazine on subscription and I desperately wanted a show pony like Snailwell Charles! Riding for 50p an hour at Poplar Farm riding school in Brampton, Huntingdon and I too can remember all those pony's names! That too has all been developed now. I got my own pony at 13 and a kindly elderly lady, Miss Juliet Aitken, also piled the village kids ponies into her old Bedford lorry and took us to Pony Club rallies, hunter trials and gymkhanas, no boots or bandages either! Shoes were £4 a set. We too kept riding clothes for best and rode in jeans and wellies, riding hats were velvet over cork and a quarter inch of foam padding. What fun it all was. I loved pony books, Six Ponies was my favourite and I still have my copy of More Ponies For Jean. I had forgotten about the Gill series, I had them too ....Gill And Prince The Pony! I longed to be a show jumper like Pat Smythe or ride the lovely top prize winning show ponies, Pretty Polly or Snailwell Charles. I rode at the village riding school costing 50p an hour. I can still remember every one of the 15 ponies and their names. The place is now a housing estate. I got my own pony at 12 and rode in jeans and wellies, riding clothes were very expensive and saved for best for attending pony clubs rallies and gymkhanas. A kind horsey old lady in the village would pile all us kids and our ponies into her old Bedford lorry (no boots or bandages) and take us to such events. Much tack cleaning and great excitement! I got pony books like More Ponies For Jean and the Gill series of books for birthdays and Christmas. Burghley horse trials has a trade stand selling all those old books from that era, great for a bit of reminiscing browsing!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8782167599693788794.post-74618978535248650782017-08-31T08:51:24.653+01:002017-08-31T08:51:24.653+01:00HI Jane

Photo of I think it was supposed to be Ginny Lorriston Clarke hanging up a bridle, shot from behind and tastefully side lit is very elegant! Getting to the elephant ear jodhs of bygone days. I think the ears were purposeful in that they gave one more 'room' across the derrière and upper legs . Speaking as a seamstress and pattern drafter, y
ou need more 'ease' (both width and length) in the seat when you sit astride otherwise the breeches or jodhs would bind and ride up. Before stretch fabric was available, my mother tried to sew breeches for me out of non stretch fabric. They didn't have the elephant ears and needless to say were rather unsuccessful. I think I wore them once during which the side seams ripped open. Post note,, I still love the look of them and have source out a pattern to make a pair,, now I just need to find some beford cord!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8782167599693788794.post-75132509730347445232014-11-04T17:14:23.137+00:002014-11-04T17:14:23.137+00:00Hi Jane,

I have kept all the correspondance from Pony and Austin Reed, including photos of the presentation at the Horse of the Year Show at Wembley. This was done by one of the male show jumpers and I never recorded and can't remember who he was!He looked very dishy from the photos but I was too young to appreciate it at the time being the tender age of 13.I thought I might find a photo on the internet which would give me his identity but no luck so far.
Your post brought back so many memories one of which was the 'Julip Model Horses' advertised in 'Pony'. Flexible rubber toy horses which you could buy. They came in various breeds and colours you could also buy riders and various accesories. I had a strawberry roan pony and rider and I remember a dinky little hay net and bridle in particular.
